Autumn sonata1/17/2024 ![]() Tension lingers in the air as the two reunite. Throughout Eva’s childhood, Charlotte was a negligent parent, prioritising her career over her daughters and her marriage. ![]() Her daughter Eva lives in a parsonage in the country, and spends her days caring for her ailing sister. The mother, Charlotte, is a renowned pianist. The story follows their reunion after seven years. The movie centres on a mother & daughter, played by Ingrid Bergman & Liv Ullmann respectively. Warm colours are on full display throughout the film, red and orange hues being the most dominant. As the title suggests, the movie takes place in autumn. With this series of reviews (or rather ramblings), I hope that I can convince some of you to explore his vast filmography. Bergman is a well-respected household name in the film community, but he isn’t widely popular among GEN Z's today. I'm hoping that this blog post will be the first in a series of seasonal movie reviews. Ingmar Bergman directed 70 films in his lifetime, and I was delightfully surprised to find that he had a movie for every season (*ahem* much like we have our seasonal publication). But once you get to understand Bergman’s filmic rhythm and language, you unlock the door to this new and beautiful world, filled with gloomy Scandinavian skies and valuable philosophical insight. ![]() To those unfamiliar with his approach, a lot of Bergman’s films may seem too theatrical, with characters bursting into long monologues, talking extensively of their existential fears. His distinct style - often characterised by the way he frames faces - separates him from most of his contemporaries, like Fellini and Kurosawa. Born in 1918, his films frequently deal with themes of death, religion and existentialism. I saw my first Bergman film this June, and have since dove deep into the filmography of this great Swedish director. Post-high-school emptiness made me embark on a journey to explore generally acclaimed movies from the Western sphere. The name Ingmar Bergman has long been revered by both filmmakers and movie lovers.
